Does government 'help' make new cars unaffordable?

GasBuddy Blog -- Does the U.S. economy need a healthy automobile industry? I think we all agree it certainly does. But do you wonder if the help the federal government is giving it just might be choking it too?

We have a federal government that is eager to impose corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards that will bring the corporate average fuel economy to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025 regardless of whether automakers can cost-effectively meet the requirement or consumers demand it. Is anyone eager to absorb the sticker shock their newfound fuel efficiency might bring? It doesn’t matter.

Your "Prius" is neither practical - nor "affordable" for me! CAFE standards are a totally unnecessary, intrusive nuisance. American drivers who prefer higher mpg vehicles may buy them - and if they buy enough of them, the automakers will continue to make more and more of them. If American drivers prefer larger autos or trucks and buy more them - the same will hold true. The MARKETPLACE should dictate fuel efficiency - not the arbitray CAFE standards!

I fill up my Prius once a month and the most I've ever paid for a fill-up is $30. I save gobs of money because I have a fuel efficient vehicle. Sure, the car cost more to buy in the first place but I did the numbers before I bought. The first two years I owned the car was spent paying off the added sticker price compared to similar-sized gas-only cars. After that, it's been pure gravy. Gas was over $5 a gallon recently in California after a couple of refineries were offline. It didn't affect me a bit. Bring on the CAFE requirements and other incentives for even more fuel efficient cars. It's money in my pocket every time I pass a gas station!
