This is the ONE time someone needs to get involved!!! Whatever happened to the investigations into the refinery(s) that said they were closed and were not?

In Sandy's aftermath some refineries wait for electricity - less fuel supply, more fuel demand, higher fuel prices, consumer pays more everytime. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! XII/XXII/MMXII!

Sadly it might be a bit of a wait for some of those people.

I'd suspect traffic volumes are down, too. That would help the supply side.

Does anyone know how much fuel the average generator burns per day? Gotta figure a lot of people are driving to the gas station that has electricity in order to fill up their 5-gallon containers.

That seems like a good idea, @DEG, but the problem is that there are too many grades of fuel on the market, in order to accommodate all of the different requirements of all 50 states.
What this country needs is one grade of fuel that all 50 states can agree on, not the "boutique fuel" setup we currently have. Why can't everyone have the same high quality fuel that California requires? Would it really be much more expensive if every refinery could make it and every state could buy it?

Unfortunately, @jalan25, the strategic petroleum reserve consists of crude oil. We have plenty of crude supply. What isn't working right now in the northeast are the refineries that make gas, diesel, fuel oil, etc out of that crude.

Wow! It makes no sense at all that these refineries don't have at least part of their campuses on backup power. It is apparent that they are huge power users, so having the whole refinery on back up power may not be feasible; but I am sure that a couple of super-sized diesel generators could enable the refinery to operate at least partially to make, let's say - gasoline? Or maybe they are just looking for an excuse to raise prices?

Interesting. The very next article in the current list reports that “Sandy Helps Push Gasoline Prices Lower” due to decline in demand. Which is it, higher or lower? I’ll guess a little of both depending on what individual stations decide to do.

for the most part, we here in central pa were very lucky to have escaped the wrath of sandy.
i fuelled up early friday morning at the local sheetz, only took 6 gallons. only people i saw acting crazy were out of staters.
limited my driving, most others local appeared 2 also.
not gas related, but did anyone else noticed the run on water and groceries. hope it was a learning experience.

Another article here stated Sandy was causing the price of gasoline to drop But I do not believe that, refinery shut downs etc will cause gas price to go up at least briefly in the Northeast
