CNN Money -- NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Retail gasoline prices increased for the sixth straight day and hit their fifth consecutive record, auto group AAA's Web site showed Monday.

"Penn Virginia Corporation Announces First Quarter 2008 Results and Provides 2008 Guidance Update

May 7, 2008 4:14 PM EDT RADNOR, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Penn Virginia Corporation (NYSE: PVA) today reported financial and operational results for the three months ended March 31, 2008 and provided an update of full-year 2008 guidance.

First Quarter Highlights and Guidance Update

A reconciliation of non-GAAP financial measures appears in the financial tables later in this release.

In the first quarter of 2008, operating income was $60.1 million, which was $21.6 million, or 56 percent, higher than the first quarter of 2007. The increase was primarily due to 61 percent higher operating income in the oil and gas segment and 207 percent higher operating income in the natural gas midstream (PVR Midstream) segment, offset in part by two percent lower segment operating income from the coal and natural resource management (PVR Coal & NRM) segment and higher corporate general and administrative (G&A) expense.

Operating cash flow in the first quarter of 2008 increased $15.3 million, or 22 percent, as compared to the first quarter of 2007 primarily due to the increase in operating income and higher non-cash depletion, depreciation and amortization (DD&A) expense included in operating income, partially offset by an increase in cash paid to settle derivatives and higher interest expense.

The 21 percent increase in adjusted net income in the first quarter of 2008 as compared to the first quarter of 2007 was primarily due to the increase in operating income, partially offset by the increase in cash paid to settle derivatives and the increase in interest expense.

A. James Dearlove, President and Chief Executive Officer of PVA, said, "We are pleased with the performance of our oil and gas operations during the first quarter of 2008, which delivered a 21 percent production increase over the prior year quarter."

Heard a good one yesterday. The Local news was reporting an idea they had for stations to post prices per the 1/2 gallon instead of the whole gallon to make comsumers feel better about how much they are paying. So you would see prices at $2.03 instead of the whole $4.06.

Why not report the news and help the country to fight for their rights!! Report on how much the Oil companies are raping everyone and making billions!! We attacked Iraq. In return, we were supposed to get oil as part of the agreement for restructuring the country. Where is that oil??

::: I'll take who is B.S.-ing me for $500 Alex!! :::

The price is for oil futures not todays price. The price rises on the increase but we won't see any fall for 2 months if the price does fall.

This is nothing more then old fashioned greed. People are getting rich by hiking gas prices up and further up. They are making record profits on the backs of the working man. I hope they all burn for eternity.

Speedway just jumped their price to $3.999 across the state of Michigan.

All justified by the price of crude, of course!!

Boycotts don't work, we are told. Tough. I'm boycotting Speedway.

There seems to me that there are enough reasons to go around for the price of gas to go up or at least to maintain the high cost. The pundits trot out their reasons fill up the papers and news reports adnauseam.

Then a few point out the quarterly profit reports of the oilbaron companies with little if any condemnation. Why do those pundits and news reporters not go after the oil companies? The media is also part of the free enterprise system but they are not part of the misuse of that system.

OKRifle has some good points - the most important is to remove as many congressmen/congresswomen as possible and get a new fresh group in to help get things under control - we need to become more self-reliant and it is not going to happen with who we now have in office - only one problem - most good, honest and clear thinking people won't or don't want to run for office and be put through the ringer by the press. It is time for the "common man/woman to speak up and step up".

You know what this article is equivalent to? Basically saying... Give me $60 and I'll give you 9 cents back (after you pay me). The prices could go down by 1/2 and i still would not feel that its acceptable.

The gas companies are either gouging customers OR they have failed to run their business properly and lost control of being a reputable stable business supporting the public good. Leaders of these companies should be in jail and new people (maybe private maybe government) should take over. Maybe hugo chevez had it right? Well not really, but the idea of punishing those who failed to run their business properly is something i support. They deserve to lose everything, since the rest of us are at their hand.

I don't mean to be redundant, but.....we have to start thinking "long term"!

Short term approach:
1. Remove any and all Congressmen/Congresswomen that suck up to environmentalist!
2. Pressure the Executive Branch for drilling rights in ANWR and then DO IT!
3. Demand that the Congressmen/Congresswomen (that are left after the purge) pressure the oil companies to start building refineries (incentives help).
4. Send the message to OPEC and other rouges that we are deadly serious about stopping the hemorrhage!

Long term #1:
1. Pressure the Executive Branch to charter a Blue Ribbon Committee reporting to the President to create a plan to develop an alternative fuel system and alternative power engine for all levels of vehicles! Put execution of the plan under the Dept. of Energy with a select civilian oversight panel not made up of politicians. Oh, did I mention that no oil executive should be invited to sit on the committee?
2. Create a National Laboratory (like Los Alamos/Manhattan Project) with true leadership and with the same resolve and focus as was created to build the Atomic Bomb (took 28 months).
3. Populate the lab with scientist and engineers to come together with a dedicated mission to "develop an alternative fuel system and alternative power engine for all levels of vehicles"!

Long term #2:
Ditto the same process for a National Power Grid using every feeder source available known to man, i.e., wind power, nuclear, solar, hydro systems, and even coal. Focus a “brain trust” talent group to study new power generation concepts!

God Bless America and protect its future!

No more will short term solutions work as long as China and India and others demand is rising. We need a stronger economy to compete worldwide.
